When Ingevity was spun off from MeadWestvaco (now WestRock) in May 2016, it became the largest publicly traded company by revenues headquartered in the Charleston area, and was, in many respects, a new company. But, the truth is, Ingevity is not a new company. It is a well-established, successful and growing business that has been a part of the community for more than 70 years.
As a leading manufacturer of specialty chemicals and high-performance carbon materials, Ingevity creates value-added products from renewable, wood-based raw materials.
“At Ingevity, we improve the world through innovations that purify, protect and enhance,” said Michael Wilson, Ingevity’s president and chief executive officer. “We leverage our deep technical expertise and knowledge of our customers’ industries to develop solutions that create value for them… and us. We are dedicated to improving daily living by advancing technologies in automotive carbon, pavement, oilfield and industrial markets.”
The company operates in two segments: Performance Materials and Performance Chemicals.
The Performance Materials segment is the leading global manufacturer of highly engineered, sawdust-based activated carbon used in the gasoline vapor emission control systems of cars, trucks, motorcycles and boats. These activated carbon products help to recover millions of gallons of gasoline every day and prevent the release of hazardous air pollutants into the atmosphere. Driven by increasing environmental regulations and strong vehicle sales, the business has grown rapidly. It also sells into food, beverage and water purification applications.
The Performance Chemicals segment refines pine-based crude tall oil, a co-product of the papermaking process, and manufactures it into higher value-added chemical products for use in various industrial markets. For example, Ingevity is the largest provider of emulsifier additives to the asphalt and pavement industry, and a pioneer and market leader in the rapidly expanding warm mix asphalt segment. These products help extend road life and reduce atmospheric pollution. The company also designs innovative chemistry for oilfield applications that allows customers to drill directionally and enhance their production performance. Additionally, Ingevity offers a range of products to industrial market applications, including agrochemicals, adhesives, lubricants and inks, to name a few. Some of these products include adjuvants and dispersants that protect farmers’ crops by safely strengthening and enhancing our customers’ agricultural products, and environmentally friendly ink resins that enhance the color vibrancy and glossiness of printed publications.
Ingevity is proud of what it has accomplished in its first year of operating as a stand-alone company. “Our first year was remarkable,” said Wilson. “The spinoff itself was a major undertaking that required significant efforts from many people in our organization. In addition to those activities, we were able to drive our business forward and deliver solid financial results.”
Just as importantly, Ingevity has fully embraced its role as a good corporate citizen in the community in which it – and its nearly 500 Charleston area-based employees – reside.
“Giving back to the community is an important part of who we are as a company,” said Wilson. “We encourage our employees to get involved in the organizations and causes they are passionate about. And, we have a program that supports and matches their contributions of time, talent and treasure.”
In November 2016, Ingevity and its employees presented a check for $1,012,146 to Trident United Way. Ingevity runs the largest United Way campaign in the region, and 2016 marked the third consecutive year that the company raised more than $1 million for the non-profit organization.
“What I think makes Ingevity really unique is its people,” said Wilson. “That may sound cliché, but we do have a special work culture here. We hear it over and over again from the people who have joined our company. We’re bold, energetic, ingenious and genuine. In my view, it’s the spirit, curiosity and drive of our people that give us a competitive advantage in the marketplace.”
A history of innovation, a commitment to the community, and genuine people. “Put it all together, and we believe we have a formula for success here in Charleston,” Wilson said. “It’s hard to imagine being headquartered anywhere else.”
