Growing to Better Serve Berkeley, Charleston & Dorchester Counties
Sponsored by: Trident & Summerville Medical Centers

Having served the families of North Charleston, Summerville and beyond for more than 40 years, no one is more mindful of the healthcare needs that growth has brought to this corner of Charleston than the Trident Health team. The caregivers at Trident & Summerville Medical Centers are focused on staying ahead of the growth by constantly evaluating and expanding services to meet the needs of families in this region. Today, the Trident Health team includes Trident Medical Center, Summerville Medical Center, Moncks Corner Medical Center, Centre Pointe Emergency and more than 20 physician practices.

“Our goal is to ensure that we stay ahead of the needs of the community and are prepared to provide the care that they need close to where they live and work,” said Trident Health CEO Todd Gallati. “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life. This is our mission and we live it every day.” For Gallati and the Trident Medical Center team, that means introducing high-end services and physicians who can treat the most complex injuries or illnesses from a trauma or the most complex cardiac cases that in year’s past might have been considered untreatable.

At Summerville Medical Center, CEO Lisa Valentine has been focused on providing for our growing families. “As a parent and a hospital CEO, I know exactly how critical it is to have the right care for your children close by,” said Summerville Medical Center CEO Lisa Valentine. “That is why we are investing in expanding our facility and recruiting the best doctors. In March, the Summerville team broke ground on a $59 million facility expansion that will centralize services for women and children, while adding much-needed space.

Since 2015, the Trident Health team has introduced a host of new services: mental health services, an outpatient burn center and a Level II trauma center at Trident Medical Center; a pediatric ER, along with pediatric inpatient and pediatric intensive care at Summerville Medical Center; and a new community-based ER near the Tanger Outlets in North Charleston – Centre Pointe Emergency. Within the past six months alone, the team has initiated nearly $100 million in expansion projects – an expanded ER at Trident and a two-story addition at Summerville. In addition, they have recruited more than 20 physician specialists in the past year. Later this year, they will welcome more new physicians in the following specialties: Cardiothoracic Surgery, Family Medicine, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Maternal Fetal Medicine, OB/GYN, Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatric ENT, GI & Surgery.

Additional program expansions are certainly on the horizon and include the launch of a new minimally-invasive heart procedure for those suffering with AFIB, advanced treatments for reflux, increased rehabilitation services, expansions to the mental health program and additional off-campus services.
